Trainers - Shoe Drive

Trainers are launching a fresh new initiative to support the community. Their aiming to collect 1000 pairs of sneakers so that Mission Australia can cop $1000 worth of Vans product. The kicks will then be distributed to organisations such as Triple Care Frame, Brighter Futures and Homeless Street Soccer. If you want to help out or get involved it's easy. Vans x Hellz Collab

Sneak & Destroy - One Offs

Nixon x Primitive Collab

Nixon and Paul Rodriquez have collab'd to create two limited edition Rubber Players, for sale only at the California location of Primitive - A sneaker boutique that Paul is co-founder of.

The first of the colourways is a purple number, featuring a vibrant yellow face, the Primitive logo and an amethyst. Inspired by Paul's home team - The LA Lakers, the purple is nothing, if not, in your face.

The black colourway is truly the opposite. Understated and simple, it features an aquamarine stone, black face and turquoise hand. Blending Nixon's attention to detail and quality products with Paul's signature style has definitely worked, creating two great watches that make an impact.

The Butcher Shop - WA

The Butcher Shop is an inspirational store - stocking a range of apparel, art, supplies and mags / books to keep perthites more than happy. MSTRpeace has a quick chat with owner, Aimee about the store, up and coming talent and how hard it's going to be for kids in WA to express themselves soon.

You have a pretty innovative concept with your store, The Butcher Shop, could you tell us a little about it?
The store aims to inspire - with its range of artist tees, original artworks, books, mags and other designer goodies - and aims to help you create with a range of gourmet art supplies sourced from around the world.

How did you get started? What inspired the store?
Not sure there is a short answer to that, its been a bit of an evolutionary process to get where we are today. I first opened a store called Keith + Lottie 5 years ago. Fresh out of fashion design school I decided to give retail a go - a way to combine my love of all things design. I didn't feel there was a whole lot in the way of career opportunities in Perth, and decided to do my own thing was a way to stay in the industry, stay in my home town and give a little back to P-Town. So from here there was an immediate interest from local artists, which lead to the addition of a gallery space and then to the addition of The Butcher Shop which is where we began selling the supplies. This year we have had a bit of a reformat for the store, combining all the best aspects from our experiments into The Butcher Shop as it is today.

The Butcher Shop won a pretty big retail award this year right?
*blush* we don't like to gloat. Ummm, we did take out WA Independent Retailer of the Year this year. But there is always more work to be done and things we want to improve on, so we are not hanging up our boots just yet.

And you have expanded online too - Do you find new mediums, such as your website, online store and facebook allow you to connect with artists you wouldn't normally have a chance of interacting with?
Our website has always been an important aspect of our business. I really have no idea how we would survive without it - I really don't think we would exist. It really has opened up a whole new world for all sorts of subcultural groups, communities, businesses. So in answer to your question... yes!

The Butcher Shop seems to be pretty involved with the local art community - What's the Perth art scene like and how has it changed over the years?
Yeah we do as much as we can, and always wish we could do more. We are particularly involved with Northbridge's burgeoning scene which has been advancing in leaps and bounds. In the past 5 years we have seen a whole lot more young retailers open, gallery spaces, studios and small bars too. I think we are really lucky to be part of this fresh, new emergence which seems to be having a big impact on the city as a whole. To see young people staying in Perth and getting stuck into it is great. Our Northbridge scene is very supportive and we do a whole lot together to help existing and encourage new creatives to the area - you can check http://www.onwilliam.com.au/ to see what I am on about. When these places started opening people would always asked if we were scared of the competition, how much stuff could Perth really support, blah, blah. But I say bring it on, the more the merrier! The more stuff happening, the more people can be involved, the more people are inspired to do stuff - the more interesting people there will be to support it all.

It's set to change again shortly with some pretty archaic legislative changes about to make it extremely difficult for young artists in WA, what's the story with that?
Yeah, it is pretty scary times over here at the moment. We have a very conservative Liberal government in power which seems hell bent at stifling culture and creativity in various ways, not to mention basic civil liberties. So we are talking a complete ban on the sale of spray paint and markers over 6mm wide to all people under 18 with no exemptions for educational or employment purposes. It will be law soon. I see it as a very sad attack on young peoples rights, but in the end these guys are creative and I don't think its going to stop them.

You were part of Paint in Protest recently - How did it go?
Yeah we did our bit - a nice little demonstration of art in front of Parliament. There was a bit of mention about it in Parliament and the press, so hopefully to enlightened at least a couple Pollies to the extent it will effect young artists.

Perth has been an art & design hotspot of late - Semi Permanent hit the city recently - What impacts do events like these actually make on the scene?

Anything like that I think is great. A splash of inspiration, building some bridges around the world and locally too. Day to day everyone is so busy at their own little things, that its great to sit back sometimes and see yourself in the context of the worlds creative community. Sometimes you get caught up with thinking we are so backward down under, or maybe you forget the rest of the world exists - I think things like SP are hugely important.

Got an eye on any local or national artists at the moment?

Well, I love a local pimp. Kid Zoom is absolutely killing it, and deservedly so. Creepy , Daek from Last Chance Studios and Deathbot are all making splashes. Perthite Fudge is about to have his first solo show - highly anticipated after teasing us with bits a pieces in group shows for years now...

Artist We Love - DEPH

Deph has been on a lot of radars of late, with some Hello Kitty recognition recently and the release of new munny characters shoving him into the Kidrobot lime light. He's collaborated with the likes of Disney, Circa Footwear, 686 Enterprises, Urb Magazine and Mazda - just to name a few.

But Deph is more than just a pretty face - He's also the main man for a little brand ya'll might know. He's a total multi threat - a street artist, illustrator, toy creator and fashion powerhouse. Check out more of his work at his website.
